At The Healing Center we try to make the admissions process as easy as possible for people, which is why we have created this guide on finding treatment for addiction.

What Are Addiction Treatment Programs?

Addiction treatment programs are facilities that specialize in treating individuals who are struggling with alcohol or drug addiction. Treatment programs aim to stop the misuse of substances, address the issue of psychological and physical dependency, and create a plan for long-term recovery.

According to The National Institute on Drug Abuse there are over 14,500 rehab facilities in the United States. There are also a multitude of private clinicians who offer substance abuse services as well as non-profit groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous. The compilation of different treatment options can make it difficult when someone is going through the process of finding treatment for addiction.

What Are The Different Types Of Addiction Treatment Programs?

One of the first steps in finding treatment for addiction is understanding the type of program you should be looking for. Depending on your individual needs you may need a specific type of program that can offer certain medical care and therapeutic services. The different types of levels of care for addiction treatment are as follows:

Detox

Detox is a level of care that provides 24/7 medical supervision and care for individuals who are detoxing from drugs and alcohol. Detoxes offer round the clock supervision, medication management, and therapeutic services to help ease the symptoms of withdrawal and ensure the person’s symptoms are properly monitored to avoid any serious health problems.

If you are experiencing withdrawal symptoms when you stop or cut down the amount of alcohol or drugs you are consuming, then you should be reaching out to detoxes in order to safely detox from the substance(s) that you are currently physically addicted to. Detox is always the first step in the addiction treatment process if you are physical dependent on a mind-altering substance.

Residential Treatment

Individuals normally enter into residential treatment after they have completed a 7-10 day stay at a detox. Residential treatment centers offer similar services to a detox, but they focus more on the therapeutic treatment of addiction. Clients in residential treatment still have round the clock supervision and medication management services, but they also have access to a wide range of therapeutic services. The residential level of care in addiction treatment normally offers cognitive behavioral therapy, group therapy, trauma therapy, family therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, holistic therapy, and other services.

If you have completed a detox or are not currently physically addicted to a substance, then residential treatment may be a good option for you to look for. Residential treatment can normally last anywhere from 30 to 90 days and is a great stepping stone towards long-term recovery.

Partial Hospitalization Programs

Partial Hospitalization Programs, which are commonly referred to as PHPs, are the highest level of outpatient care that is available for addiction treatment. Partial hospitalization programs offer the same array of therapeutic services as residential treatment. The difference between residential treatment and PHP programs is the amount of supervision that clients receive while in the program. In a PHP program clients often live in off campus sober living homes. While the sober living homes still have behavioral health technicians available, they do not normally have 24/7 nursing care and the staff to client ratio is normally higher. PHPs also do not offer the same number of hours of care, since clients do not live on site at the facility.

Partial Hospitalization Programs are a great option for individuals who have either completed detox, only had a short relapse, or who are completing a step down treatment plan. If you are in any of these situations, then looking for PHPs should be part of your process when finding treatment for addiction.

Intensive Outpatient Programs

Intensive Outpatient Programs are commonly referred to as IOPs and they provide outpatient services for a lower number of hours per week then PHP programs. Intensive outpatient programs normally occur either in the morning or in the evening, and the schedule is normally about 3-5 days per week. Since clients go to IOP for a limited number of hours they do not offer the same variety of therapeutic services as PHPs and residential treatment.

Intensive Outpatient Programs are perfect for individuals who have completed residential and/or partial hospitalization programs. IOPs allow clients to have more freedom, while still providing structure and consistent support. Most individuals who attend IOPs live in sober living homes, but intensive outpatient programs also work with individuals that do not reside in sober living.

Outpatient Programs

Outpatient programs, also referred to as OP, on average run from 1-3 days per week. Clients are normally provided with group therapy, individual therapy, and medication management services. At this point in their treatment plan, individuals are often working and have completed at least one of the higher levels of care listed above.

IOPs should be included in your process of finding treatment for addiction if you have completed a higher level of care and are still looking to continue a lower level of treatment for support and consistent therapeutic services.
